Old Rag Mountain Stewards

Helping hikers understand how to protect themselves and the resource

About the Stewards

We are an all-volunteer group, providing mountain education and resource interpretation specifically geared toward visitors to the unique environment of Old Rag Mountain in Virginia's Shenandoah National Park.

In addition to the education, we act as first responders to medical incidents on the mountain.

Volunteer

Do you enjoy hiking Old Rag? Would you like an opportunity to give back? Old Rag Mountain Stewards is always looking for bright motivated volunteers. We provide training and support; you provide willingness to learn and enthusiasm. We ask volunteers to commit to four days a year (two in the spring/summer and two in the fall). We also hold a couple of training weekends during the year. If you would like to come out and see what it is like, shoot us an email at info@oldragmountainstewards.org.

Training

We hold a couple of training weekends each year on topics such as Wilderness First Aid, Leave No Trace, outdoor skills, and aviation safety (for working around helicopters). In addition, training is provided every day we are on Old Rag to ensure that volunteer skills are maintained.
